Modernity: the indie movie deconstructed on IM
IM conversation with Joy, sparked by discussing "Me and You and Everyone We Know":
Joy:
I am not sure that indie movies are for me.
they leave me cold more often than not
Marcia:
there is a formula, just like with mainstream movies
Joy:
what is the formula?
Marcia:
painstakingly quirky person A (who has either a cold or quirky family) meets painstakingly quirky person B (who is a loner). they have a hard time connecting
but they overcome it
even if it's just a little
sometimes the obstacle is a weird made-up affliction that one of them has
let's say, someone with a telephone pole fetish or someone who is allergic to air
and we discover that the world is also kind to awkward weirdos, if they can open their hearts a little
(though sometimes they can't and then it is a sad movie)

You really know how to boil things down to their essence. Now do magical realism.
